We had to say a sad goodbye to another sanctuary favourite this week…
It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we share the sad news that we have had to say goodbye to our beautiful fox, Keira.
After becoming unwell last week, further veterinary investigations revealed that Keira was suffering from multiple tumours throughout her body. Sadly, there were no treatment options available, and the kindest, most compassionate decision was to let her go peacefully, surrounded by the people who loved her.
Keira first arrived at Hopefield Animal Sanctuary as a tiny cub in 2016 after she and her sister, Mia, were rescued from a breeder. Like so many domesticated foxes bred for the pet trade, they had been denied the care they deserved. Keira was lethargic and lacked the playful curiosity any young fox should have. Veterinary examinations revealed she was suffering from a tummy infection and ear mites, but thanks to expert treatment, patience and lots of love, she made a full recovery.
Over the next ten years, Keira flourished. Curious, intelligent and full of personality, she became a much-loved member of the Hopefield family and a firm favourite with our staff, volunteers and visitors. Watching her transform from a poorly cub into a confident, thriving fox was a privilege and a powerful reminder of why rescue is so important.
As an exotic animal rescue in Essex, we are committed to giving vulnerable animals like Keira the second chance they deserve. Every animal that comes through our gates has their own story, and while not every ending is the one we hope for, we take comfort in knowing Keira spent the last decade surrounded by safety, compassion and the freedom to simply be a fox.
Keira and Mia were also wonderfully supported through our animal sponsorship scheme over the years. To everyone who sponsored them or donated towards their care, thank you. Your kindness helped give Keira the happy, secure life she should always have had.
Sleep tight, beautiful girl. Thank you for ten unforgettable years. You will always be part of the Hopefield family and will never, ever be forgotten. ❤️
