Working with Animals in Essex: Marissa’s Journey to Senior Animal Caregiver at Hopefield

If you’ve ever dreamed of working with animals in Essex, there’s nothing quite like turning that passion into a career. And Marissa’s journey at Hopefield Animal Sanctuary is a lovely example of where dedication, hard work and a genuine love for animals can take you. We’re delighted to announce that Marissa has been promoted to Senior Animal Caregiver at Hopefield, recognising her commitment, experience and the incredible contribution she makes to the lives of our rescued animals.

From Volunteer to Senior Animal Caregiver

Marissa’s journey with Hopefield began at the start of 2022, when she joined us as a volunteer. Having discovered a passion for animal welfare and sanctuary life, she went on to start an apprenticeship with us in September of the same year.

In 2024, Marissa took on the role of Animal Caregiver and Activities Host, combining her love of our rescued residents with creating memorable experiences for visitors. This included hosting birthday parties, supporting our ethical animal experiences and helping visitors learn more about the wonderful animals in our care.

She subsequently became a full-time member of our animal care team, continuing to develop her knowledge, practical skills and understanding of the needs of our many different rescued residents.

Now, she’s taking the next step in her career as Senior Animal Caregiver.

Building a Career in Animal Care in Essex

Working with animals is about so much more than simply spending your day surrounded by them. It takes patience, dedication, practical skills and a genuine understanding of animal behaviour and welfare. At Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Essex, our animal care team plays a vital role in looking after hundreds of rescued animals, each with their own individual needs, personalities and stories. From daily feeding routines and cleaning habitats to monitoring health, providing enrichment and so much more, no two days are quite the same.

Marissa’s journey also highlights the different opportunities that can come from getting involved with an animal sanctuary, whether that’s through volunteering, apprenticeships or developing a career in animal care. For anyone interested in working with animals in Essex, gaining hands-on experience and learning from an experienced team can be a valuable first step.

A Promotion Well Deserved

Marissa has been part of so many different corners of sanctuary life, and it’s been a real pleasure watching her confidence, knowledge and skills develop over the years. Behind this promotion are years of hard work, commitment and, above all, a huge amount of love for the animals who call Hopefield home.
