Hopefield Welcomes Ozzy the Sulcata Tortoise

Hopefield Animal Sanctuary is delighted to welcome Ozzy, a magnificent sulcata tortoise (also known as an African spurred tortoise), who has recently found his forever home with us in Essex.

Ozzy’s arrival was certainly memorable. After escaping from his previous home, he was discovered wandering and taken to House & Jackson Veterinary Hospital. What makes the story even more remarkable is that, just a few days earlier, his owners had contacted Hopefield to ask if we could provide him with a permanent home because they were no longer able to meet his needs. They warned us he was a notorious escape artist—and they weren’t wrong!

At an incredible 60kg, Ozzy is already an impressive size, yet he still has room to grow. Sulcata tortoises are the third-largest tortoise species in the world, with some adults exceeding 100kg and living for more than 70 years. Their remarkable size, strength and lifespan are just some of the reasons they require highly specialised care throughout their lives.

The Hidden Reality of the Exotic Pet Trade

Ozzy’s story shines a light on a growing issue facing animal sanctuaries across the UK.

Every year, thousands of exotic animals are bought as pets because they look unusual or fascinating. Many species, including sulcata tortoises, are sold when they are tiny juveniles, giving little indication of the enormous size they will eventually reach or the specialist care they require.

As these animals mature, owners can find themselves struggling with the cost, space and commitment needed to provide the right environment. The result is that increasing numbers of exotic pets are surrendered, abandoned or passed from home to home, placing significant pressure on rescues and sanctuaries.

While many owners genuinely want the very best for their animals, the reality is that some exotic species simply aren’t suitable pets for most households. Researching an animal’s lifetime needs before bringing them home is one of the most important steps anyone can take to help reduce the number of exotic animals needing rescue.

A New Beginning for Ozzy

Thankfully, Ozzy’s adventure has a happy ending.

He is now safely settled at Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, where he’ll receive the specialist care, nutritious diet and secure environment he needs to thrive for the rest of his life. Our team is already getting to know his cheeky personality, although we’ll certainly be making sure his new enclosure is thoroughly escape-proof!

We’re incredibly grateful to Ozzy’s previous owners for recognising that rehoming him was the right decision and for ensuring he could begin this new chapter with us.
