Exotic pet rescue in Essex: Five macaws fly into their forever home at Hopefield

They have ended up here at the sanctuary after having been used to being taken to a large outdoors aviary on a daily basis where they were able to spread their wings and fly around, this came to a stop when their owner sadly passed away last year. Unfortuantely, his wife wasn’t in a position to be able to give them the care they needed, so after much deliberation the difficult decision was made that it would be in their best interest to find them a new home. Macaws require very specialist care, and not an easy bird to keep as a pet. They originate from South America where they live in rainforests in the wild, and in captivity they need a lot of space in order to lead healthy, active lives. As they can live around 60-years, they also require dedication – six decades of care is a LOT of care! As one of the largest exotic pet rescues in Essex our team of exotic animal caregivers will be spending a lot of time in the coming weeks getting to know these birds and settling them in.

One of them has a swelling on its face and chest, and another has a twisted beak, so they’ll also be getting checked over by our vet to see if there’s anything that can be done to fix or improve these issues. Once they have finished their treatment and quarantine, we’re hopeful that we’ll be able to successfully introduce the group to our single male macaw, Blue, and that they’ll live happily together as a flock.
