Johnny the donkey is facing a cancer battle

Unfortunately we have sad news to share after our lovely Johnny had emergency tests recently:  Johnny has cancer. It’s difficult to put into words just how heartbroken we all feel.

Although Johnny has only been with us for a relatively short time, he has already become such a cherished member of the Hopefield family. His gentle, affectionate nature and sweet personality have won over everyone who has met him. He has brought so much joy to our staff, volunteers and visitors, making this diagnosis incredibly difficult to come to terms with.

As many of you know, Johnny was rushed to the vets last week after developing a serious problem with his eye. We knew there was a possibility we could be facing something significant, but we never imagined we’d be receiving this diagnosis. Our veterinary team is now consulting with a specialist to better understand exactly what we’re dealing with. We’re hoping to have more information tomorrow regarding Johnny’s prognosis, whether the cancer has spread, and most importantly, if there are treatment options available that could give him the best possible quality of life. Until we have those answers, we’re trying to remain hopeful and take each step as it comes.

The response from our supporters over the last few days has been truly overwhelming. We’ve received countless messages asking how Johnny is doing and offering donations towards his treatment and care. Your kindness, compassion and support mean more to us than we can ever express, and it has brought comfort during what has been an incredibly emotional time.

At the moment, we don’t yet know what the road ahead looks like. Once we’ve spoken to the specialist and have a clearer understanding of Johnny’s treatment plan and ongoing needs, we’ll update everyone and let you know if there’s anything further you can do to help.

For now, Johnny is exactly where he should be—back home at Hopefield, surrounded by the people who love him. He’s receiving the very best care from our dedicated animal team, along with plenty of fuss, reassurance and all the love he could possibly want. Whatever lies ahead, we’ll make sure every decision we make is in Johnny’s best interests and that he knows nothing but kindness, comfort and care.
