Devon only recently reached the grand old age of 14 — an incredible milestone for a cow who, in the meat and dairy industry, would likely never have lived beyond 18 months old. He arrived here at Hopefield in June 2013 alongside Jude and Wanda, after being rescued by another sanctuary. They had stepped in to save the trio from slaughter on a short-term basis, but without the land to keep them permanently, they reached out to us to offer them a forever home. And what a life Devon went on to have.
For the past 13 years, he has known nothing but love, safety, kindness and peace. He spent his days grazing with his friends, enjoying the sunshine, receiving fuss from our animal caregivers, and meeting the thousands of visitors who fell in love with him over the years. Knowing he got to experience that life — the life every animal deserves — brings us some comfort during such a heartbreaking time.
Cows are deeply emotional, sensitive animals who form incredibly strong bonds with one another, and the loss of Devon will be felt not only by our team, but by Chip and Wanda too. Because of this, we will be postponing our cow experiences for the next week or so, to give them the time and space they need to grieve.
Devon, you have left a huge hole in so many hearts. Thank you for every cuddle, every slobbery nose boop, and every special moment over the years.
