Saved from Death Row: Meet Coco the Cockapoo

Dog rescue in Essex – meet our latest addition to the Hopefield family…

At Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, we are proud to be part of the dog rescue community in Essex, helping vulnerable dogs find safety, understanding, and a second chance at life. Whilst we are NOT a dog rescue in the traditional sense (we don’t rehome our animals so they stay with us for life, meaning that we are always stretched for space and resources), occasionally we have the opportunity to save a dog literally from death row.

Meet Coco, one of our newest and most special rescues. Coco is a beautiful 2.5-year-old Cockapoo who now has a home for life here at the sanctuary with Dave and Lianne.

We were first contacted by a veterinary practice who had been asked to put Coco to sleep due to behavioural challenges. As an established animal sanctuary in Essex, we are always focused on helping animals most in need. The last thing we planned to take on at the time was another dog — but the thought of a young, physically healthy dog losing her life was something we simply couldn’t accept. So, we stepped in — and a couple of weeks ago, Coco arrived safely at Hopefield.

When Coco first arrived, it was clear she was wary of people and would need time, patience, and understanding — something we specialise in here having rescued many similar dogs. However, the moment she met the other sanctuary dogs, everything changed. It was as if she had always been here. She settled quickly and became a valued member of the pack.

Coco has formed an especially strong bond with Dave (and the feeling is completely mutual). Watching her confidence grow day by day has been incredibly moving for everyone involved in her care.

Coco is not a “problem dog”. She is a loving, gentle soul who was simply misunderstood. She now has the second chance she truly deserves — safe, loved, and exactly where she belongs.

Supporting Dog Rescue in Essex

By supporting Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, you are helping us continue our work rescuing and rehabilitating dogs and other animals across Essex. Every visit, donation, and share helps us save lives like Coco’s. We’re re-opening to the public on 27th March so if you’re looking for a wholesome day out for a good cause, do come down and see us. Whilst our dogs are not in an area accessible to the public, due to their ongoing rehabilitation in many cases, we do have hundreds of animals here who can’t wait to meet you!
