Xico to the Rescue: Dianne the Amazon Parrot Comes Home

Some good news after what had been quite a rubbish week…

Last week Dianne the Amazon Parrot managed to escape via the airlock to her aviary, after she frantically flew over to say hello to our member of staff who then fell back on the door which saw Dianne seize the moment to take off!

For the next four days, she decided she wanted to live at the top of some of the tallest trees at the sanctuary, making it impossible for us to coax her down. Whilst feeling completely helpless, all we could do was keep an eye on her whereabouts, and regularly head over to try and tempt her down. Dianne has never been wild, so doesn’t have the same instincts and skills to survive, so with the freezing overnight temperatures, we were growing concerned that she might not make this ordeal.

On Tuesday morning, our Senior Exotic Animal Caregiver, Xico, returned from a weekend away after missing all the drama, and we explained what had happened…

Xico got to work straight away trying to get her back (we know we shouldn’t have favourites, but Xico has a huge space in his heart for Dianne), and to our amazement, Dianne recognised him, and flew down from the tree to a telegraph pole, and then down to the safety of Xico’s arms.

It was heartwarming to see the bond they’ve clearly built over the years, and we’re SO pleased that he managed to get Dianne safely back where she belongs – well done Xico!
