Recently we had to say goodbye to Rosie, a very special rabbit who spent the last six years of her life safe, loved and cared for at Hopefield Animal Sanctuary. 💔
Rosie’s story began in heartbreaking circumstances. Six years ago, a concerned member of the public discovered rabbits being advertised online for meat and made the decision to rescue as many as she possibly could.
When she arrived at the property, the conditions and treatment of the rabbits were deeply distressing. They were being handled so roughly, grabbed by their ears and back legs, that some were screaming in pain.
Among them was Rosie.
A rabbit rescue that changed Rosie’s life
When Rosie arrived at Hopefield, it was clear she urgently needed veterinary attention. She had a broken leg which had been left untreated for so long that a severe infection had developed.
Sadly, the damage was too extensive to save her leg, and amputation was the kindest option to give her a chance of survival.
But Rosie wasn’t going to let three legs stand in her way!
Following her recovery, Rosie adapted beautifully to life at the sanctuary. She showed us that rabbits with disabilities can still enjoy a wonderful quality of life when given the right care, patience and environment.
For the next six years, she had everything she had previously been denied: safety, comfort, good food, warm beds and, most importantly, the freedom to simply be a rabbit.
Why rabbit rescue matters
Rosie’s story is a reminder of why rabbit rescue and animal welfare work are so important. Rabbits are often misunderstood, and sadly, some experience neglect, cruelty and inadequate veterinary care.
At Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, we believe every animal deserves compassion, regardless of their age, background or physical needs. Rescue isn’t simply about giving an animal somewhere to live; it’s about giving them the opportunity to experience the life they should always have had.
Rosie’s life may have started with cruelty, but that wasn’t how her story ended.
She had six wonderful years surrounded by love, and we feel incredibly privileged to have been part of her journey.
Sleep tight, beautiful Rosie. You were so loved, and you’ll be missed more than words can say.
