We take a look at the he reality of animal cruelty in the tourist industry and how we can all avoid being part of the problem.
Across the UK, millions of farm animals are born into a system where their lives are measured in productivity rather than individuality. Behind the labels, packaging and supermarket shelves are living beings capable of feeling pain, fear, comfort and joy. For many of them, the chance to live a natural life simply doesn’t exist.
That is why farm animal sanctuaries like Hopefield Animal Sanctuary matter now more than ever.
The scale of animal agriculture in the UK is enormous. Every year, around 1 billion land animals are slaughtered for food in the UK, including over one billion chickens, around 14 million sheep, nearly 10 million pigs and almost 3 million cattle. These numbers are almost impossible to comprehend. They represent individuals — animals who are curious, social and capable of forming strong bonds.
Chickens, for example, are intelligent birds who form complex social hierarchies and recognise dozens of other individuals. Yet over a billion are killed every year in the UK, and many spend their lives in systems designed purely for efficiency and output. The scale of this industry means that even when welfare improvements are introduced, millions of animals may still experience lives far removed from their natural behaviours.
As the RSPCA has highlighted, low-welfare farming remains one of the biggest animal welfare issues in the world, driven by the huge demand for meat, dairy and eggs.

At sanctuaries, we see the animals behind those statistics.
Cows who love being brushed.
Sheep who follow their favourite carers around the field.
Pigs who play with enrichment toys and enjoy belly rubs.
Chickens who dust bathe in the sun and chatter to their flock.
These animals are not products. They are individuals with personalities, preferences and the ability to feel happiness and fear just like the animals we share our homes with. Yet the reality is that most farm animals are never given the opportunity to live out their natural lifespan or experience the freedom to simply exist.
Sanctuaries change that.
Farm animal sanctuaries play a vital role in giving animals a second chance at life. Animals arrive from a wide variety of circumstances — neglect cases, farm closures, unwanted pets, or situations where owners simply can no longer care for them. For many of these animals, sanctuaries are their only chance of survival.
Unlike commercial environments, sanctuaries do not measure animals by productivity. They are cared for because their lives have intrinsic value.
At Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, that belief drives everything we do.

Providing a lifelong home for rescued farm animals is not easy. It is a commitment that lasts for years — sometimes decades.
Large animals such as cows, pigs and donkeys require extensive land, specialist veterinary care, nutrition, shelter and dedicated daily care. The cost of maintaining safe fencing, barns, enrichment and medical support for hundreds of animals is enormous. At Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, we provide a forever home to over 700 rescued animals. These include alpacas, goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits, donkeys, chickens, ducks and our cows — animals of all shapes, sizes and stories.
Many arrive frightened, neglected or simply unwanted. With time, patience and care, they learn to trust again. And when they do, it is nothing short of remarkable.
One of the most important principles of a true sanctuary is that animals are given a home for life. They are never sold, traded or moved on for profit. Instead, they are allowed to grow old, form friendships, and experience the peaceful life they should always have had. Every day of that life matters.

Sanctuaries cannot exist without the compassion of the public. Unlike farms, sanctuaries generate no income from the animals themselves. Instead, they rely on visitors, supporters, legacies, donors and volunteers who believe that animals deserve kindness and protection. When people visit Hopefield, they do far more than enjoy a day out meeting incredible animals. They directly support their care. Every ticket, every donation and every share on social media helps feed animals, fund veterinary treatment and maintain the safe, loving environment they deserve.
Sanctuaries offer something powerful: a glimpse of what life can look like when animals are valued for who they are rather than what they produce.
They remind us that farm animals are not so different from the pets we love at home.
They feel fear.
They feel comfort.
They feel joy.
And they deserve compassion.
At Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, we will continue working every single day to give rescued animals the safe, forever home they deserve. Because every animal matters. And every life is worth saving.
